Our Design Approach

Initial Conversation
We discuss the needs and desires you have to build a custom home. This includes location, size, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, and any other living spaces envision for your custom home. We also go over any questions or concerns you may have.

In Office Consultation
This will usually be about an hour-long conversation. We will discuss floor plan ideas, why you want to build and move and how Shawn Lash Signature Homes will get you there. Before this meeting concludes, we present a Plan Design agreement. This will allow us to start the design process with one of our amazing plan designers and set up your personal build portal and app. This is where you can see the timeline, process budgeting and communicate directly with us.

Plan Design
Now the fun part begins! You will sit down with Shawn and one of his plan designers to get the design of your new home. On average, this will take 2 weeks to draw the first draft and 1 week per plan change after that. There are typically 2-3 drafts per custom home. After each draft, we will meet either in person, by phone, or virtually to discuss the changes you want and make sure we have the plans for YOUR house exactly how YOU want them.

Final Selections
While the concept plan is being drafted and changed, we will begin the journey of selecting the interior and exterior design of your home. Meeting with our suppliers, we will begin with the kitchen and bathroom design and select all interior finishes after that. You will be able to pick everything from floors to doors, cabinet pulls to countertops, and plumbing fixtures to lighting fixtures.

Final Plan Design
This is where you sign off on your plans! You’re done with the design, and now it is time to start building your dream home!
Frequently Asked Questions
The entire process typically takes about a year. The initial consultation, design, and planning take anywhere between 30 to 90 days. Next, we submit the plans to the County, and it can take up to 8 weeks for them to approve the permits. Then, construction can finally begin. We usually finish within 8 to 10 months of the permit approval. As much as possible, we coordinate subcontractors and make contingencies so everything can keep moving forward with your Shawn Lash Signature home.
While we try to address all possible issues before they become problems, we may encounter obstacles out of our control. We will advise you well in advance if we foresee any possible delays due to vendor schedules or product shortages/delays, and will work with you for an effective solution.

To say you won’t have any change orders is not realistic, but it’s our goal to have as few as possible. While change orders are how typical franchise builders increase their profitability, we seek to streamline the process while remaining transparent. Ideally, the design plans we create together can carry through to completion so that reality matches your custom home vision!
We aim to minimize change orders during our budget meetings and design process, long before your home’s construction begins. If a contractor discovers an issue or you change your mind on something, we build in wiggle room so your custom home build stays on track.
